With event season already started, and spring and summer opportunities rolling in, you might want to think about who you are in an event or competition.

Myself and Dr Elanor Cormack, Fit-Think, have compiled a few ideas for you around the concepts of your race identity and your race activation levels. We’ve been working with the team at Ourea Events supporting the athletes who have entered the Cape Wrath Ultra, Dragon’s Back Race, and Northern Traverse series.

Check out the link on the Cape Wrath Ultra blog.

  • Decide who you want to be on race day.
  • Decide what part of your character is best suited to the goals you have on race day.
  • Identify race day behaviours that embody that character.
  • Consider how to stay in the race day zone. Think of your activation zones a temperature gauge: hot/red, temperate/green, cool/blue.
  • Practice being your race self.
  • Write a description or draw a picture of your race self.

Whilst everyone is on the same route, you are all in different races. Recognising what YOUR race is will help to get you to YOUR finishing line, whatever that looks like for YOU. No one else can judge your efforts.
